Elaine was a singing student of mine. She was a very accomplished creative dancer. I learned a very important truth from Elaine. “Your voice needs to be heard.”
After studying with me for two years, one day Elaine burst into tears.
“Are you Okay” I asked.
“Yes”, She said choking back emotion. “It’s just that this is the first time I’ve been allowed to be heard. As a child, I was raised in a very strict, unemotional, English home. Children were to be seen, not heard. My voice, my thoughts and my ideas were not wanted. If I remained silent, I was acceptable. Now I am making noise. Some sounds are beautiful some aren’t and it’s okay. I feel so free. My whole world is changing.”
Elaine changed as her voice changed. She now gave herself permission to share herself with the world in a more confidant and compelling way. Yes, you need to be heard. Your voice is important.
