Who Are You?

Don’t Let Who You Are Get in the Way of Who You Can Become.

Many people ask me what I do in my voice sessions. Here’s my brief “elevator speech” answer.

open-house-pictures-with-sanaa_orig“I use singing techniques to help speakers improve their speaking voices. I use speaking techniques to help singers keep their voices healthy when speaking. The side benefit of this approach is that many singers become better speakers while many speakers experience the joy of singing“

I like to stretch my students in unfamiliar ways. Consider this truth, “You can’t change without changing.”

Change means taking a courageous leap of faith and trying something new.

A woman once said to me, “I could never take singing lessons. I don’t know how to sing.”

I wonder if that same woman would say, “I can’t take swimming lessons. I don’t know how to swim.” Or “I can’t take driver’s training. I don’t know how to drive a car.”

Living with that kind of philosophy everyone would drown. Driving would be even more chaotic than it is already. If we only took lessons to learn what we already knew, our lives would stagnate pretty fast. We’d never grow.

Have you had bad experience when singing? Do you notice that everyone is a critic? I wouldn’t be surprised if the woman I mentioned in the previous example had someone say some unkind thing to her about her voice at one time. Often an off-the-cuff or even a deliberate nasty remark might keep you from singing or speaking in public.

If you have the desire to sing or speak then find a vocal coach who knows what they are doing. You cannot teach yourself to sing. You cannot teach yourself to speak. You simply do not hear or see yYour Unique Voice Iconourself as others do.

Contact me if you think I can help you with any of your vocal questions.
